Generators For Home Use – How To Choose The Best One ?

When searching for the right generator for home use, it depends on what exactly you are wanting to do with it. Are you just looking for a small generator to power lights and a few small appliances?

A small portable generator will work just fine for the small scale stuff.

For others it means a generator big enough to power their entire home.

What Size Generator is Best?

If you are planning to power your entire home, then I would suggest either purchasing a commercial size generator unit or building a solar / wind system according to what you need.

As a child growing up we did not have alectricity but we used a small generator to run things like washers, lights and small appliances and it worked just fine.

You need to be careful though with some bigger appliances, such as vacuum cleaners, when plugging them into a small generator.

I have blown vacuum cleaners by plugging them into too small of a power source.

We had a big noisy diesel generator unit that powered our shop and barn stuff, so we would run a line into the house to run the bigger appliances and there was enough juice there to power anything and everything we could ever have in a home.

Just build your own generator for home use.

There are many guides and programs online to help you build a really nice solar or wind system to power your home.

Building your own generator with either solar or wind is by far the best option as far as long term re-usable energy.

Propane is another source of energy that will power many of your appliances and even your generator for home power.

The nice thing with propane is that you can store enough to last for several years without the hassle of evaporation as with regular gas.

The Amish have lived off the grid for centuries and while they do use wind energy for power, one of their main sources for energy has always been propane.

You can power anything and everything from lights and heating to washers and dryers with propane.

Small generators for emergency power.

If you are simply looking for a simple backup generator for home use sort of thing, than a 1500 or 8000 watt is all you need.

Don’t forget about storing fuel for you generator. Which is why you might want to look at propane or diesel as it stores so much better than regular gas.

While our MAIN concern should be to make sure we have enough food stockpiled, safe drinking water etc for our families, there is no doubt about it that having SOME sort of a small generator for home makes anyone feel better and more prepared!
