People are always looking for a way to save money and renewable energy is an obvious step to take with the rising oil prices and fossil fuels becoming rarer by the year. Renewable energy includes many sources, such as the wind, kinetic energy from water and the sun’s rays. The sun’s power is amongst the easier to purchase, install and utilize and has become the focus of many scientific improvements over the years. This makes it a prime focus for many prospective buyers looking to more towards cheaper, more manageable electricity production. While the initial cost is high, it’s possible to break even relatively quickly, depending on the size and quality of said solar panels. Let’s take note of the new advancements in solar power.
Thermovoltaic
Thermovoltaic devices focus on harnessing the energy produced by the difference in temperatures between two differing materials. With efficiency getting better in this area, it’s becoming an excellent method of improving solar panel effectiveness. Normally, panels utilize the protons in the sun’s rays to move the negative electrons in the semiconductor panel.
Solar panels traditional work by utilizing the flow of protons sinking into the semiconductor silicon material. They cause the electrons to flow through the panel to make a current that can then be harnessed. The flow usually goes from the front to the back of the panel, due to them being negative electrons.
Efficiency up to 20% has been recorded. This makes it competitively as effective as traditional solar panels. However, in conjunction they are significantly better. By combining the two different methods of harnessing the same energy, higher efficiencies are recorded.
Concentrated Photovoltaics
Concentrated photovoltaics, or CPV, is one of the newest technologies being rolled out. Like the traditional solar panel technology, light is directed onto the panel to create usable energy. However, CPV focuses more light onto a smaller area, creating just as much, if not more, electricity.
This makes it especially applicable for home use, where both space and cost is a concern. The reason for this price drop is directly tied to the reduction in materials. With less materials needed to make the necessary panels, the cost is lowered.
