Renewable energy is no longer a thought or goal for the future, but a rapidly increasing part of the present. We are all looking to be a more Eco- friendly energy choices, but that should not be our only reasons for looking to other energy sources, and fast. Our government is in support of green energy and providing funding for projects, but we are responsible for doing our part as well. Read on and find out why the time has arrived to get renewable energy now.
If you have not spend any time looking into renewable energy, do not wait any longer. It should no longer be a goal, but something that is an everyday reality for our country. A major crisis should not be the reason that we are forced to switch to an alternate energy source. In fact, we should never be forced to do anything. Options provide you with the ability to make better decisions. There are five types of renewable energy at our disposal, of the five, hydropower is the greatest. Then following hydropower there are solar, biomass, geothermal and wind.
With the help of federal funding from our government through the Office of the EERE, several projects were granted over two million dollars in 2009. These businesses, industries, and universities are doing their part and worked on their own renewable energy projects. It will be a long time in coming, but one day we may have all of our electricity coming from renewable energy.
Hydropower makes up for nearly seventy three percent of the total of our renewable energy. The process is actually easier than you might think at first. Water flows through pipes into which are called a penstock. After it goes through the penstock, the water turns a generator, and the generator produces the electricity. Hydroelectric energy comes from hydropower, and the Hoover Dam which was build in 1936, became the world’s biggest electric generating system.
The sun can provide us with energy for electricity and heat. Energy that we get from the sun for heat is known as solar thermal. When it is taking sunlight and directing it into mirrors or lenses to generate electricity, it is known as a high temperature collector. There are also low temperature collectors which can be used to heat pools, and medium temperature collectors which are used to heat homes and larger buildings. These collectors are photovoltaic cells which use the radiation absorbed from the sun in the same way that electricity is created.
Wind power is another great benefit and another simple process. The motion of the wind is converted into mechanical energy by a wind turbine, which generates electricity. Wind power is being used regularly now in California and Texas. It also has the benefits of giving off no greenhouse gases while producing energy.
Geothermal power is much different that solar thermal power. It has to do with trapping heat that is underground, and building energy from the trapped heat. The heat being tapped into is actually coming from the core of the earth. It can be closer to the surface in some areas, which makes it easier to harness. It is harnessed by the trapped heat naturally creating steam, and then the steam being used to turn a steam turbine.
Biomass power is an interesting form of energy. We find out that the plants have been using their cells to store the sun’s energy for us all along. By burning these plants, we can create energy. There are power plants operating on biomass fuels with turbines that heat water to generate electricity.
We are not short on options, but we are getting shorter on time. We have made great strides in the advancement of renewable energies and continue to look into them for our near future. We should consider them a part of our nearest future because green is not the only reason we should get renewable energy now.
