Young Energy Savers – A Reliance Energy Initiative

India is world’s 6th largest energy consumer, accounting for 3.4% of global energy consumption. Over the past 30 years India has seen a growth in the energy demand by 3.6% p.a. As of March ’09, the installed power generation capacity of India is 147,000 MW, while the per capita power consumption is at 612 KWH. The total demand for electricity in India is expected to cross 950,000 MW by 2030.

These numbers may not sound bad to a common man but for experts they are of great concern. A common man never understands the importance of conserving electricity. They have to understand that in India a major chunk of the power consumed domestically is wasted.I:2:J

This waste is generally unintentional but hits the consumers and the suppliers simultaneously. This wastage results in increase in cost of electricity for the supplier and consequently the electricity bill of the consumers. Consumers blame the distributor for high bills. What they don’t realize is that this can be avoided at their ends.

Energy conservation is achieved through efficient energy usage which involves decreased energy use. It results in increase of financial capital, environmental value, national security, personal security, and human comfort. Individuals and organizations that are direct consumers of energy may should conserve energy in order to reduce energy costs and promote economic security.I:3:J

This can be done in a very simple manner. Substituting the normal bulbs with CFLs results in saving of electricity. One using desktops should switch off their monitors when not in use.

Such awareness is the need of hour. Young Energy Savers, an initiative of Reliance Energy is such an attempt. Students of more than 90 schools took part in this awareness program. Under this, competitions like logo designing, slogan writing and painting competitions were organized at all these schools.

The winning paintings were transformed to cards which are being circulated among the consumers to make them aware of energy conservation. Other then these cards various other merchandise like mugs, T Shirts and calendars are also circulated, which also speak about energy conservation. Besides these various workshops were organized to create awareness about the conservation on energy. Kids were primarily chosen because they are future of our nation. The more aware are the kids about the energy crisis which we might face in near future more are the chances that we can avoid them. This program in general help the students understand the need of energy conservation and how they can change things at their homes to bring about a tremendous change in the field of energy conservation.I:4:J

Energy conservation is a necessity and this has to come from the end of consumers. YES is one such noble initiative. Over the time it would definitely help create ample awareness and avoid energy crisis in our country.
