Pull Twelve Months of Bills

Download a full year of usage from your utility's website — kilowatt-hours and therms, not just dollars. Plot the monthly numbers and note where the peaks land.

Find Your Baseload

Your mildest month — no heating, no cooling — shows the energy your home burns just existing: water heater, fridge, electronics, always-on devices. Everything above that line is climate control.

Do a DIY Walkthrough

On a cold or windy day, feel for drafts at doors, windows, outlets, and attic hatches. Measure your attic insulation depth with a ruler and note the age of your furnace, AC, and water heater.

Get a Professional Energy Audit

A blower-door test and thermal scan turn your suspect list into measurements. Many utilities discount or subsidize audits — check before paying full price.

Rank Upgrades by Payback

For each recommended fix, divide its cost (after any rebates) by its estimated annual savings. Sort ascending and start at the top — air sealing and attic insulation usually win; big equipment waits its turn.

Fix, Then Verify

After each upgrade, compare the same months year-over-year on your bills, adjusting mentally for unusual weather. If the numbers didn't move, find out why before funding the next project.

Two homes with identical bills can have opposite problems. A house with a flat usage curve and a high baseload is wasting energy around the clock — think an old water heater, an inefficient fridge, or a crawl-space dehumidifier running nonstop.
